John was picked up by the authorities post-attack/”the dad incident”. Being quite visibly shaken and without any other legal guardians to take him in, Rose (the Egberts’ new family practitioner/a longtime friend through Papa Egbert’s fling with her mother) took over. She brought him back to her and Dave’s place, a fairly spiffy downtown apartment, and took off to get things sorted out at the station. Dave had spent the day moping/being Dave and ruminating on the fact that his older brother is still serving in active duty while confirmed as a virus carrier. Dave was discharged some weeks earlier for reasons.
Dave and John spent the rest of the night shooting the shit and drinking.
Meanwhile, Jade’s been in contact with the rest of her research team via webcam. She’s about ten miles off the coast in a fairly comfortable environment collecting samples for pharmaceutical purposes, and regularly goes on day trips with Bec. Despite her age, she’s pretty advanced in her field of study and is pretty close with military intel. She knows about Karkat and company due to direct correspondence.
In which Doc Scratch is the Surgeon General and LE-Alpha is the mutated version of 1025Z-Beta.
Betcha can’t guess what the “LE” stands for hurhurhur.

I know she hasn’t appeared yet, but here, have a VirusStuck Vriska that I accidentally humanized when I forgot to add horns.
…wouldnt she want to cover up…? and not prance around in a wrap and a thong…?
Shhhhhhhh my friend I can show you the world
Scanty underwear on gals forever
Also VS takes place in LA because reasons, and it is hot in LA. It is hot in apocalyptic LA. And this is Vriska who tends to be incredibly, uh, romantic (in the literary sense of the word) with her ideals, and I have the headcanon of her happily dressing in the cinematic stereotype of her every adventure (see also: fairy FLARP dress).

This took way longer than it should have, and it’s pretty self-evident, so I won’t explain much.
They’re all stuck at a military compound not far from the coast. For the sake of getting to draw cool looking hills and creepy valleys later on, I’m saying Blackstar Canyon some 40 miles south of Los Angeles (notorious for odd/suspicious activity, supposed military training grounds, aliens, ghosts, squatters, etc.). Karkat’s regularly subjected to testing due to his unnatural genetic structure/blood, and though he used to pull quite the with-all-due-respect-sir Bitch Fit, he’s become complacent about it now. They’re all separated from each other, for the most part, unless they’ve been on good behavior.
Terezi is in correspondence with Dave (illegal and on the DL), but otherwise, rarely sees others. No pun intended.
Sollux and Aradia used to work as a team on Alternia. They were the first to discover the virus and successfully implemented a “cure”. Obviously, the endgame was to fix things with their own species, but somehow the disease was spread to humankind.
Anonymous asked: This is just a question for Virus stuck; Jade seems to have Bec in her lab. During this zombie outbreak, were animals also mutated? Or are they safe? Is Bec kept close for an attack dog purpose as well as companion ship?
Jade’s lab is a satellite of a larger military base; she’s actually quite removed from the mainland and resides in a research facility near Avalon (for the record, we’re going with L.A. as the setting for the AU— both your typical disaster/survival cliche locale, and the only place I know well enough to blow apart). While there are other in-house researchers staying on the island with Jade, it gets pretty lonesome, so she brought Bec along with her. He functions as both a companion and a guardian. Without giving too much away, think Will Smith’s dog Sam in I Am Legend.
And yes, animals can definitely get infected.
I had to do it. Homage to Tarantino, nearly verbatim from this scene.
Let’s say that the military isn’t quite up to snuff in terms of containing the outbreak, at least not in terms of Dirk’s standards. He and the other three are confirmed to be infected with the virus (in its beta-form; though not inherently threatening to its host, the more benign version is still thought to evolve into a fully-fledged state of mutation/decay after an unspecified amount of time). Being the loose-cannon soldier he is, Bro’s not going down without a fight.
Though roughly ten years older than their counterparts, Jane/Jake/Roxy/Dirk are still related to John/Rose/Dave/Jade in a parental sort of way. Their exact lineage is unknown to them, and they think themselves siblings and/or cousins. They’re not.
Shenanigans.
Let’s pretend I made a title page this time.
Rose and Dave live together as siblings. Their exact relation (whether blood or otherwise) isn’t entirely communicated, but they don’t question it and deem it as arbitrary. Rose graduated with her M.A. two years prior, while Dave’s age is roughly 22-24; I’m not really sticking to exact timeframes here. While Dave and John have met before, they only know one another through Rose, as John’s father was regularly one of her clients. Since John didn’t have any immediate family/next-of-kin to watch over him, she was the first person phoned to pick him up post-attack. As a result, John’s now shacking up with the two of them.
Dave doesn’t really care about anyone outside of his own personal sphere of influence, but sometimes John really knows how to hit the right nerves.
After completing her doctorate’s degree, Jade’s career became that of insider importance. As one of the leading specialists on the subject of the contamination, she regularly participates in studies (and reports in via sattelite, due to her remote location) that aid the “war against the outbreak”. It was assumed that it was something akin to cancer, yet spreadable via direct contact—- naturally, biological warfare was the suspicion.
Trolls are the only other intelligent lifeforms Earth has had contact with. Their appearance a year before has been covered up by the US government and any outsider knowledge/leaks about their presence is regarded as treason. Due to the effects that the virus have on the body (disfigurement, deepening of skin tone, etc..), it’s been assumed that the trolls have created it and are currently initiating attack on humankind.
Karkat is one of the only trolls to have regularly spoken with US intel/Jade. Of course, he thinks it’s all incredibly stupid. Because it is.
The Striders were employed on a nearby base prior to the outbreak. It was assumed to be biological warfare, though only military personnel and those working closely with intel can claim to know the strain’s origin.
Dave was discharged for reasons yet to be revealed. Bro is still taking part in active duty and has been identified as a carrier of a gene sequence that is likely to cause dormant infections to evolve into fully-rendered zombie funtimes.
Despite the likelihood that Dave has it too, he refuses to get himself checked out.
